Central Florida begins the 2010 college football season with a renewed belief in their system and a new quarterback under center. The Golden Knights missed the opportunity at a division title when the ECU Pirates topped the Houston Cougars to win the conference in the closing weeks of the 2009 season. The G-Knights had a successful season going 8-5 and 6-2 in the conference, including a 37-10 win over then No. 15 Houston in Week 10. They may have fared much better had they not dropped to 0-2 to start the season. However, they stormed back with six consecutive conference wins, but then concluded the campaign with their third bowl loss in as many years, falling to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers 45-24 in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

Consistency seems to be the name of the game for UCF, and if they get some, they could very well win the C-USA East crown in 2010.

Here's a closer look at the 2010 Central Florida Golden Knights to help make your College Football wagers winners.

Offense:

With the exclusion of a few key components, including quarterback Brett Hodges, the Golden Knights offense remains mostly intact. It will be the job of offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe to blend together returning veterans and new freshman in an attempt to recapture the essentials of an offense that was ranked fourth highest in scoring, while allowing the fewest points scored in the conference last season.

The offensive push will start with newly minted QB Rob Calabrese, who appears to have the starting job going into fall practice. The sophomore started in three games, along with four other appearances last season completing 25 passes for 265 yards with three TDs. He showed his leadership skills by leading a 10-play touchdown drive, where he completed 5-of-7 passes, with five minutes remaining in last year's bowl bid. His quest for a starting position will be challenged by freshman Jeffrey Godfrey who will keep the coaches looking, should Calabrese run into any unforeseen problems.

The ground attack will be led by returning RB Brynn Harvey. As a freshman Harvey rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 TDs on 261 attempts. A knee injury threatens to delay his 2010 start for up to four games. If that happens running backs Brendan Kelly and Jonathan Davis could get more opportunity to prove themselves early on.

Calabrese will have a pair of capable receivers to help bolster his passing stats in 2010. The first is junior wide out Kamar "Hollywood" Aiken who drug down 36 receptions for 610 yards last season. On the opposite side will be all-around wide receiver, A.J. Guyton. Despite his small frame, standing just 5-11, he plays much larger. The sophomore standout averaged 13 yards on 44 receptions, contributing a total of 572 yards for the G-Knights offense.

Defense:

Derrick Hallman, Lawrence Young, Kemal Ishmael, Josh Robinson and conference Defensive Player of the Year, defensive end Bruce Miller are just a few of the defending jewels that return to a very good Golden Knights squad that led the conference in total defense and sacks, as well as scoring defense, rushing defense and tackles for loss.

With the departure of Corey Hogue, Josh Linam and Chance Henderson, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, will need to be prepared to hold down the middle second row. They will get some help from Young on the outside.

The secondary looks solid with junior safety Derrick Hallman right in the thick of things.

2010 Prediction: First in the C-USA East: UCF return 19 seniors and 17 players who started at least once a year ago. Most would guess that his alone should be enough to get it done in 2010. While that factor alone does afford them a distinct advantage over other teams within the C-USA, a lot of the Golden Knights success will rest on their ability to bring back last year's defense, keeping the score low enough to overcome a sometimes-anemic offense. With other teams in the East retooling this coming season, the Golden Knights cannot afford to give up this "golden" opportunity.

Autograph collecting has become an extremely popular pastime among sports fans. Whether it be baseball, basketball, racing, football or hockey, obtaining your favorite athlete's autograph can be both a fun and rewarding hobby. And, surprisingly enough, it's not as difficult as you may think.

If you have the opportunity to visit a training camp for your favorite sports team, a race shop for your favorite race car driver or a special autograph signing event, this will be a great way to obtain an in-person autograph. Bring your own items to be signed and make sure to bring along a sharpie, or other permanent, marker! Almost every training camp offers autograph possibilities for fans. Location information, along with times and policies, are available from every major sports organization. When collecting autographs, the most common items to have signed include photos and index cards. But, there are many other options for collectors who wish to build a truly unique collection of memorabilia. Some alternate items to consider would be a hockey puck, a basketball, baseball, tennis or golf ball, a football, a sports jersey, racing flag or a helmet. Always be polite when asking for an autograph and never ask for more than two items to be signed at any one given time.
If your geographical location, or schedule, doesn't permit you the opportunity to get an in-person autograph, don't give up. Many fans enjoy collecting autographs through the mail and do so with great success. Before you do anything, you will need an accurate address. Now that you have an address, you're ready to begin by simply writing a polite letter to your favorite athlete. Be sure to let him/her know how much you enjoy their involvement in their chosen sport and kindly request an autograph. Most importantly, remember to keep it short but also personable. If possible, always handwrite you letter - avoid typing because it may resemble a 'form' letter. You will want to make sure that your favorite athlete knows that you are sincere in your quest for his/her autograph. If you're asking for him/her to provide the photo, always remember to say 'please' and 'thank you.' When your letter is ready for mailing, fold it to fit inside the #10 envelope. You will also need to affix $0.60 postage on a 9x12 envelope, fold it 3 ways and place it inside with your letter. This will serve as your self-addressed stamped envelope, so don't forget to write your address on the envelope so that your photo will find it's way back to you. It's also a good idea to write "Photo - Please Do Not Bend" in the bottom left corner of your 9x12 SASE.

If you are requesting a signed index card, you should provide your own. The most popular choice are the un-ruled 3x5 plain white index cards. For this request, use a regular size envelope as your SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) and affix $0.37 for return postage. If you live outside the USA, please check with your postmaster for the correct amount of postage needed.

If you decide to send larger items to be autographed, such as a baseball, helmet or jersey, you can choose to either send loose return postage inside the box with your request, which will allow the athlete to sign your item and simply affix the postage on your box for return shipping. Otherwise, you can simply send a few dollars and let them know that the funds are being sent to cover the cost of return postage.

Now that you've started your new collection, be aware that you may also purchase autographs from a dealer if you are unable to acquire them yourself. The industry has taken a hard hit with forgery and false certificates of authenticity, so research any dealer before you buy from them. Take into account how many years they have been in business, whether or not they are a member of the Better Business Bureau in their area and, if they are, check to see if they've had any complaints filed against them through the BBB by visiting http://www.BBB.org. When all is said and done, a certificate of authenticity is only as good as the person who stands behind the guarantee. The bottom line is to know who you are buying from, research other examples of authentic signatures and consider every factor before making a final decision to purchase. Equipped with plenty of knowledge, every fan can make the hobby of collecting autographs a fun and rewarding pastime.

Do you know that soccer game is influenced by the Chinese? The soccer history has a documentary evidence that such game or exercise which involves kicking a ball into a small net is evidently used during the Han Dynasty by the Chinese military around 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. A field marked out to a ball-kicking game had also an earlier proof that has been found at Kyoto, Japan.

Frankly speaking it is quite impossible to accurately say where and when soccer game started. Although it is reasonable to assume that the game we have known today as soccer originated from some type of ball game which has been played at someplace in the planet for over 3000 years.

The Greeks and ancient Romans both played soccer like type game which has some similarities in a modern soccer, though during the early times, teams have up to 27 players.

The soccer history is quite hard to accurately figure out. Scotland and England was believed to be the co-founders of this organized game, Football, but Soccer is how it was called in Britain, became the most popular sport from the 8th century onwards. Britain is the birthplace of the modern soccer and association football.

Eton College, a famous English school, in 1815 developed a set of rules which later on standardized and had a version called the Cambridge Rules which was adopted by most of England's Universities and Colleges in 1848.

Eleven London clubs and schools sent their representatives on October 26, 7863 in the Freemason's tavern to create a single set of fundamental rules to administer the matches played amongst them. The meeting was then the creation of the Football Association.

Most schools have different kinds of sports activities for children to participate in, be it football, archery, basketball, swimming, and so on. Some children are athletic and enjoy the sports, while others avoid them at all cost. Certain sports are mandatory, such as swimming, which is a part of gym instruction.

Some parents are sports enthusiasts and think organized sports are a great idea, while others think the academic aspect of school should take priority over anything else. Parents sometimes put a lot of stress on their children when it comes to sports activities. The child is often urged to participate whether or not he or she wants to. This does not promote a healthy attitude towards play, exercise and socializing for the child. In fact, a child may turn completely away from the activities that have been forced upon them by rebelling in very harmful ways.

Organized sports benefit a child because they learn what it means to function as a team, and be a team player. Learning how to accept winning and losing graciously is part of growing up. Leadership qualities are developed, as well. Good sportsmanship is an important lesson to learn. But, as a parent it is important to learn and grow with your child when choosing the best sport for them to be involved. A child who is forced into a sport that he or she hates will sometimes resort to intentionally failing in academics simply to avoid being forced to play.

Academic studies will carry a student well into the future, while participating in a sports activity will build character and leadership qualities needed for a career goal. Any student should be allowed to choose what, if any, sport they want to participate in. Sports activities have good and bad qualities. Yes, they build character, but there are times when one who is forced to be a player and is not all that good at it, is put in a position of having to defend himself against those who choose to bully or harass him. What does that teach the students?

Learning about fairness is another plus for the idea of organized sports. And the fact that one doesn't always come out a winner. Its all about how the game is played, and not the results. Some students are just not comfortable with playing any sports, and prefer to concentrate on their studies, and there is nothing wrong with that mode of thinking. Character is built in many ways, and it's how one chooses to do it that counts.

If someone is pushed into a sport activity, and fails, it leaves a lasting impression on them. Failure, and not living up to the expectations of someone else, can do more harm than good. If a student wants to participate and learns that he really isn't very good at it, choosing to stop playing is a choice that should be theirs, and only theirs. Parents and schools should not push or insist that their child be active in any sport that doesn't make them comfortable.

Wii Sports is one of the most enjoyable Wii games to play. It makes great use of the Wii technology and the movements are intuitive. There are a few tips; however, that will help you on your quest to become a Wii Sports pro.

Tennis

* Keep your wrist relaxed. Raise the Wii-mote into the air to throw the ball to serve . Just before the ball is at it's highest point, flick your wrist forward and you will hit a fast serve.

* Swing soon on volleys and ground strokes to hit the ball cross court.

* Swing late on volleys and ground strokes to hit the ball down the line.

* Get the computer opponent running back and forth and go for the winner when they start to sweat (this means the computer is getting tired).

Baseball

* Avoid swinging at splitters. You can identify them because the ball does not spin as it moves toward you. Splitters are never a strike.

* If you are a right-handed hitter, the best pitches to hit are a right-handed curve ball or a left-handed screwball. Swing at them when you are hitting, but do not throw them when you are pitching.

* If you are a left-handed hitter, the best pitches to hit are a left-handed curve ball or a right-handed screwball. Swing at them when you are hitting, but do not throw them when you are pitching.

* The computer has trouble hitting slow outside pitches, so throw them often.

Bowling

* The ball will curve if you twist the Wii-mote as you are bowling the ball before you let go of the B button.

* You can over spin the ball so try to find just the right amount of spin. The best seems to be starting with your palm facing the ceiling, then finishing with your palm facing the wall to your left if you are right-handed (i.e. turn your wrist a quarter turn counter clockwise while making your bowling motion).

* If you do the quarter turn with your wrist, aim at the arrow that is furthest to the right (if you are right handed). This will put just the right amount of spin on the ball to get a strike.

Golf

* Pay attention to the wind as it really makes a big difference in the path your ball travels.

* When putting, press 1 to see the curvature of the green and line up your shot.

* When putting, press 2 to get closer to the ground to examine the green.

* When putting, the distance your ball travels is proportional to how high you bring the Wii-mote after your back swing. Take a few practice swings to make sure you have the right height.

Boxing

* Turn the nunchuck and the Wii-mote slightly toward each other to get your boxing gloves into a defensive blocking position.

* Use the nunchuck to throw quick jabs to keep your opponent off balance.

* Do not throw jabs too quickly after one another. If you get the right rhythm down, you can throw jab after jab so that it is almost impossible for your opponent to hit you.

* After landing a jab, throw a hook with the Wii-mote.

* To throw a hook, twist the Wii-mote or nunchuck one quarter turn to the outside (e.g. if the wii-mote is pointed at the ceiling, twist it quickly so it points directly to your right if you are right-handed).

* To throw an uppercut, point the Wii-mote or nunchuck at the screen then flick your wrist upward so the controller points at the ceiling.

* Once you get near and past the Pro level, it is easier to land body shots than punches to the head. Hooks and uppercuts to the body are especially effective when combined with frequent jabs.

If you are a soccer fan you are eager to know the soccer timeline. It is a record of events that happens in the world of soccer. Every year since soccer begun there are important events that take place. Here are timelines you surely want to know:

1930's - The beginning of World Cup, the event takes place in Uruguay. Latin American countries have formed teams. Uruguay, Argentina and Chile are one of the first professional soccer team. Champion teams within the year are Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934) and France (1938).

1940's - Even though the World Cup was interrupted by the World War, American countries still managed to play soccer in the local cups and transferred players to continue the event in the region.

1950's - The World Cup is back in action. Latin America became popular and superstars like Pele and Garrincha are born. In 1958, Brazil has won the championship and this made them the unstoppable team.

1960's - The World Cup was first shown in television. Two new Cups were established, The Libertadores Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Real Madrid became the first champions in the event.

1970's - Brazil has gain most titles and championships.

1980's - The new superstar is born, Diego Armando Maradona. In 1982 Italy won the finals and the cup became a hit.

1990's - Brazil still dominates the soccer world and Mexico joined the South American Cup.

2000's - The world Cup became more aggressive and soccer gained a lot of fans all over the world.

Outstanding players like Beckham, Zidane, Gaucho and Riquelme was discovered.
Soccer indeed is extraordinary. It is getting more exciting and intriguing. Soccer timeline wouldn't miss to keep on tracking records for die-hard soccer fans.

One of the questions that I get asked most routinely is which sports I believe offer the best development capacity to young athletes.

This is a loaded question for several reasons...

First of all, ANY sporting activity lead by a quality-based coach is wonderful for kids.

That being said, the true crux and efficacy of that statement is based largely on the 'quality-based coach' comment.

It is only when poorly educated and over zealous parents and coaches (i.e. adults) get involved too heavily in youth sports that the experience can become sour. Parents often push too hard and seek success at a young age; coaches often are limited in their understanding of developmental science and routinely 'drill' kids with 'sport specific' (I hate that phrase) exercises that are too narrow in scope (not to mention that many youth sport coaches don't know how to TEACH specific aspects of movement or speed and yet get annoyed when their athletes don't perform a given drill to a high enough standard).

One the most prominent and problematic realities of the above comments is that there don't seem to be many (any?) outlets for kids just to play anymore. Every young sporting activity is a life or death struggle that MUST climax in a victory... heaven forbid we actually teach developmentally sound skills in a fun and energetic way in order to promote a wholeness to our youths development - which by the way should include emotional stability (for instance highlighting the skills gained in a given season rather than the 'wins' and trophies accrued) and mental stimulation (in the form of engaging life lessons that instill a lifelong love for physical activity rather than a win-at-all-costs mentality which can burden kids with various complexes for years).

Having said that, I encourage parents to remove the desire to watch their 8 year olds win the weekend tournament; I encourage coaches to remove there 'Lombardi' hats when they walk into a practice or game situation; I also encourage strength and conditioning coaches to remove there yearning to 'test' young athletes from a biomotor perspective and look only to increase a child's ability from a performance outlook.

In fact...

My message is simple...

Play sports seasonally.

Find coaches and programs that highlight skill acquisition rather than victory.

Find trainers who do the same - work towards instilling skills into kids rather than creating performance markers.

So, here than are my top four sports that all kids should play (in no particular order)-

1) soccer

In most parts of North America, kids lack foot dexterity and soccer is a wonderful natural enhancer of both foot dexterity and foot-eye coordination. Don't pigeon hole this ability as only necessary for soccer either. Remember, the crux of developing a 'whole' athlete is to engross them in as much athletic stimulus as possible at a young age. Increased foot dexterity will, in time, round out a youngsters overall ability and allow them to progress in there 'chosen' sport more proficiently.

Additionally, although many North Americans find soccer to be 'boring' (although I will need an explanation on how soccer is boring, but baseball and golf are America's pastimes) it is a wonderfully athletic and tactical-based sport. Sudden bursts of explosive power, change of direction, looking two plays ahead, playing a 'forcing' based defense in which the defender uses their body/skills to change what the offensive player wanted to do - these are fantastic athletic lessons that can be filed away in the nervous system and used at a later point in any sporting activity.

2) Swimming

Unloaded shoulder and hip mobility adds a great deal of pliability to the frame of a young athlete. With so many injuries occurring due to restrictions and tightness in kids (yes... I do believe wholeheartedly that many of the youth sport injuries we see annually throughout the world could be prevented with a simple and basic increase in both systemic strength and mobility) hip and shoulder mobility initiatives are crucial.

Additionally, kinesthetic differentiation is a physical skill lacking in many kids (this refers to the knowledge of how much force is necessary to produce a desired result). My opinion on this matter is simple - everything we tend to do with kids, both in sport and training, is based on maximal efforts. In our zeal to search for those 'performance markers', we overlook the notion that sub-maximal efforts are both developmentally sound and build certain physical qualities not seen in high force-based outputs. Swimming is the essence of building kinesthetic differentiation - kids simply won't last long in a pool if they put as much force as possible into every stroke.

3) Martial Arts

Almost every martial art I am familiar with is based on skill acquisition as a primary marker. Not only is that mentally and emotionally good for a child, but it infers the teaching of patience and 'enjoying the journey' rather than 'searching for the destination'.

While a great deal of martial arts practices in North America have become watered down (8 year olds earning black belts - if you knew anything about traditional martial arts, you know how ridiculous that is), most organizations I am familiar with teach a wonderful style of patient skill development and discipline.

Athletically speaking, dynamic flexibility, end-range systemic strength, mobility, spatial awareness - the physical ability built through martial arts is awe-inspiring and can apply to any sport.

4) Gymnastics

Again, the physical elements that can be built through gymnastics are amazing - spatial awareness, flexibility, relative strength, dynamic and static balance - the list goes on.

If for no other reason, the ability to know where you are in space and take a fall 'well' is a required skill for any sport.

So... there's my list.

Don't get me wrong, the list is nothing without a quality coach at the helm of each of these respective sports. Martial arts instructors for instance, are often archaic in their knowledge of warm-up design as are gymnastic coaches in their practices of flexibility enhancement. Having said that, good coaches do exist and I urge you as a parent to find them. I also encourage trainers to seek out joint venture partnerships with quality coaches and augment a child's development with solid strength and skill acquisition-based training habits.

Play soccer in the autumn.

Swim in the summer.

Participate in martial arts through the winter.

Take gymnastics in the spring.

Mix in some developmental training and play other sports recreationally for interest and development sake (basketball and baseball for example).

By the age of 13 - 14, you'll have a solid athlete with limited injury who understands sport tactics and is strong, mobile and flexible...

Not a bad place to be!

'Health is wealth', is the hymn for the 21st century too, as has been for centuries. Each of us dreams of living a long and happy life free from health ailments and illnesses of any kinds. Our health is of prime importance in the quest for a happy life. Everything else can be acquired and achieved if your health is good. Most of the people who have a dream of making it big in life achieve their dreams at the cost of their health - they take too much stress and push themselves a tad bit more than they can handle. The end result is devastating - you have earned the riches and have an excellent social status at the age of forty odd, but your health has gone for a toss! You end up spending all that you have earned on recovery to good health. But there are no guarantees when it comes to your health. May be even after spending substantial amounts on your health, you might still not be fine and in good health, because of the damage that has already been done so gradually over the years.

Why do we then tend to neglect our health so much? What are the possible things we can follow to ensure permanence of good health? As parents, how much time and energy do we invest in teaching our kids the importance of health and fitness? For you to influence your kids' mind and teach them the importance of health and hygiene, you have to set a good example for them. If you are a parent, then it is your prime responsibility to imbibe in your kids the importance of living healthy. At home, you can start taking corrective measures for yourself and preventive measures for your kids in many ways. Start doing the small things that are important and achievable and soon you will realize that mind-sets and health conditions are improving. For instance, keeping the family especially the young ones on their toes can be a tough call, given the kind of sedentary lifestyle some kids have got accustomed to. Kids and teenagers want to only lie in front of the idiot box, watching cartoons or playing games on Play Stations respectively. There hardly seems to be any fervor for sports in kids now-a-days.

Research has shown that kids who are into a habit of exercising on a daily basis lead a much healthy life. They are prone to fewer diseases and lead a life free from coronary ailments, for instance. Exercise and sports are the best way to keep a good health. Habits that are made a practice in childhood are difficult to recoil from in the long run. Regular exercise can be inculcated as a habit since childhood, and only then can it be effectively practiced for as long as ever. At times, parents do not allow their kids to play and indulge in sports for the fear that their children might only take to sports, thus neglecting education totally.

On the contrary, almost all researches carried out by child psychologists on the psyche of children have proven that children, who are allowed to practice some sport or the other, have less chances of developing obesity in future, which is one of the major reasons for health problems in children in the United States. Research also points out that almost all kids who have indulged in sports at one point or the other in their life have a higher chance of being ambitious, and are successful in their careers as compared to those kids who have stuck to their play stations. Playing some sport since childhood inculcates a desire to win and excel in all aspects of your life, as it motivates you to be competent and successful. It develops the sportsman spirit at a very young age which stays on forever.

Health and wellness are directly proportional to the kind of lifestyle that we lead in the long run. Good health cannot be achieved in a year or two. But let us at least pledge to take corrective measures for our own betterment, so that we may live healthy for as long as we live! Diet and fitness should be given due importance in our lives, as they are the key factors that determine how long or how healthy we may live.

This workout is a bit different. It was during a time when I really needed to focus on max strength in my lower body, thus the extra heavy work throught the session. Obviously, all strength training workouts for football will focus on strength, but, there can be a slightly different focus depending on your needs.

For example, while we are always working on our strength, we might put an emphasis on speed, or on a specific muscle weakness during certian periods of the year

o This is why it's ULTRA important that your Football Strength and Conditioning Program be adaptable! You have to be able to build on strengths and hammer the weaknesses.

1/2 Deadlift in the Rack - 135, 225, 310, 410 x 2; 500, 600, 650 x 1; 705 x 1,2,1,2,1,2

o The Partial Deadlift should be rotated into any good football strength program. It builds tremendous top-end strength

o This is a great movement for taller guys (like WR's) because it shortens the ROM and allows a taller player to use some significant weight.

Sled Pulls - Sprints x 12-minutes

o I don't have the weight recorded because this was before the days of the Prowler when I used a square piece of plywood with big ass rocks on top. Not scientific, but it worked.

o I varied the distance and angle of the "sprints"

o The sled was heavy enough that it was more of a strengt feat than a speed exercise

o It's very Dino-Training/Caveman-ish, which I like

Snatch Pulls - 8 x 2 x 275

Hypers - 3 x 8 x 110lbs

o Hypers and Glute Ham raises are a huge part of Powerlifting and should also be a big part of your football training.

o They strengthen the lower back and hamstrings which greatly contributes to getting faster for football
