How to Write Effective Sales Letters

Saturday, October 30, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Sales letters should be part of your marketing arsenal. Whether you are sending them through the mail or by email, a strong sales letter can capture your readers attention and excite them about a new product or service. That is, if you write a results-driven letter. There are some things you should know about making this traditional marketing tool more effective.

Understand your audience. Use the proper voice and tone for your letter based on the group that you are sending it to. Use a formal tone for older groups and a more casual one for a younger audience. Always address it to a real recipient.

Your sales letter should not be to a general recipient. You should know your customer, address the letter by name and understand why they might want to buy from you. Tailor your offers for groups like recent college graduates, new home or car purchasers or seniors and tailor the letter accordingly.

You have a tiny window of opportunity to grab your reader's attention. Be clear and up front on what your message is about, no later than the second paragraph. Be brief and to the point. You can add more detail further down in the letter or email.

Make sure you understand the benefits of your product or service. Tell them what they can gain by contacting you and buying. Focus on what the benefits are and don't just list the features of an item or service. "You can save them time, keep them from wasting money, help them stay organized". Understanding the recipients helps you focus on the benefits that are important to them.

Everyone is more decisive if they are given a deadline. Special offers that expire at a certain are more likely to be responded to than an open-ended offer. Providing a bonus free product if the prospect makes contact by the deadline is even more compelling.

Let the reader know what you expect them to do after reading the letter. This is your "call to action". Whether it is a call to your store, going to a Web site, or filling out and returning a form, don't expect the sales letter to make your sale. It is meant only to get the prospects attention. Work on the sale after they've taken that next step.

Your letter should not be more than one-page, easy to read and professional. Proofread well for spelling and proper grammar. Use good graphic design, plenty of white space (blank areas), bullet points and italics or bold print to call attention to particular details. Emphasize key points and remember to end with the next step or "call to action".

Why is Sports Psychology So Important in Sports Today?

Monday, October 25, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

No one really talked about applied sport psychology until recently, but it has been known in one form or another for almost as long as people have played professional sports. It used to be called gamesmanship. Basically, in its most basic form, it is about psyching out your opponents while building yourself up. Sports psychologists talk about the importance of being in the zone and of creating an intimidating presence on the field. Once you have the momentum, as long as you can stay with it you can usually win. Although there are games that are a tossup until the very last moment, many games are decided within the first few minutes of play. What decides these games?

The psychology of sports is interesting not only to professional athletes, but to anyone with an interest in the mind, especially if they are into the psychology of peak performance. You see, it involves many elements. Part of it is about competitive thinking, but it starts way before the teams get to the field. In essence, sports psychology is about winning, and winning requires dedication at every stage of the game.

If you wait until you play a match to apply the principles of sports psychology, you probably won't do really well. Before that point, you need to have a winning attitude or else you will not be prepared. Training is one of the most important and difficult areas to apply to it. You have to keep your energy up each and every moment of each and every practice, or you will not be able to win. This requires all kinds of mental tricks. Sports training methods, in fact, involve many psychological techniques such as visualization, the chanting of positive phrases to create a positive attitude, and even meditation to enhance focus.

Although it is a new field, the opportunities for people with sports psychology degrees are growing every day. Many of the most successful teams in professional sports employ sports psychologists, and although they get very little of the glory, they are instrumental behind the scenes. Sports psychology is no longer a set of folksy tricks used by athletes to intimidate each other. Instead, it is an essential component of athletic training, athletic matches, and an athletic lifestyle. The psychology of sport and exercise is even used in gyms to help normal everyday people with their workout routines. Once you become aware of psychology sports, you can see it everywhere.

Planning a Football Party

Friday, October 22, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When fall comes and football is in full force women around the country begin to use the phrase football widow. I can attest to a few Saturdays and Sundays where the TV in our home is going all day and my husband is glued to his favorite chair.

After our first football season together where his team was 15-1, I decided to start hosting football parties. This way I can see my friends while he can watch the game.

Here are some simple steps to making Saturday and Sunday as fun for the rest of the family as it is for the men.

Pull the dinning room and kitchen table to the living room. This way you can set up a buffet that is in the room where the TV is. By doing this you are not creating competition between the kitchen or dinning room and the living room.

Then dig out the silver. I have found that this is a great venue to satisfy my desire to use my grandmothers silver while living a beer and chip life style. Use the punch bowl filled with ice to chill soda and beer. Use the serving trays for homemade hoagies and pesto pizza squares. Then serve dessert on silver plates using the silverware for this one course.

Prepare early. Have all the food cooked and served before the games begin. This way you can sit back and socialize while your guests are watching the game.

Serve all the food in a buffet style. Place plates and cups along side bottle openers and napkins. This allows guests can serve themselves.

Keep a recycle bin and garbage bin close at hand so that your guests can find them without having to venture too far from the game.

Then sit back and relax. When you join in the fun by planning a party your family and friends will no longer use the dreaded phrase football widow.

Arsenal vs Chelsea 12/16/07

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Eboue, Flamini, Fabregas, Rosicky, Hleb and Adebayor

Chelsea: Cech, Ferreira, Alex, Terry, Cole, Makele, Mikel, Lampard, J Cole, Wright-Phillips and Shevchenko.

Ashley Cole is getting an almighty round of boos from the same fans that used to cheer him.

It is a free Kick for Arsenal in a good position in the 8th minute of play after Lampard halted Eboue's run.

Good chance for Adebayor but his effort was woeful and way off target in the 11th minute.

Alex in the 12th minute has just almost scored an own goal as a long punt from Arsenal resulted in him headed the ball over Cech but luckily for him it was just wide.

Shawn Wright-Phillips had a chance to either play in Shevchenko or Joe Cole but he went alone and his shot was saved comfortably by Almunia in the 13th minute.

Bad pass from Flamini straight to Wright-Phillips and his pass to Shevchenko was stopped by Toure in the 19th minute.

Chelsea have been given a generous free kick in a dangerous position as Eboue is punished harshly for bringing down Joe Cole but Lampard's kick is awfully wide off the mark in the 27th minute.

Frank Lampard and John Terry have just been booked simultaneously for bad tackles on Eboue and Fabregas in the 30th minute.

The game has got messy with too many niggly fouls but Shevchenko hit a speculative shot from 30 yards out that Almunia almost makes a mess of in the 32nd minute.

Emmanuel Eboue has been booked for leaving his stud as Terry went to clear the ball in the 34th minute.

Nice shot by Rosicky from 30 yards out but it was just wide in the 36th minute.

John Terry is in a bad way and it looks like he is going to come off much to the delight of the Arsenal faithful. Indeed he is replaced by Tal Ben-Haim in the 38th minute.

Good chance for Rosicky to create a goal scoring opportunity in the 47th minute following a probing pass by Fabregas but his 1st touch was poor and it allowed Ferreira to clear the ball for a corner Kick.

Fabregas, then puts in a the corner kick but Petr Cech makes a horrendous mistake when coming for the ball and William Gallas of all people heads into an empty net in the 48th minute to put Arsenal 1-0 up.

Half Time

Arsenal 1 Chelsea 0

Arsenal did not create much in the way of clear goal scoring opportunities as Chelsea have defended resolutely but they got lucky right at the death.

Chelsea have not offered much in the way of an attacking threat and losing their skipper would not help matters at the back for them.

The returning Fabregas and Hleb have done well but Eboue has seen most the ball for them and has not always used it properly. Adebayor has done well as a lone striker but his finishing is not always the best and neither is his decision making. Clichy had played well and neutralized the threat of Wright-Phillips and when he has gone forward he has been effective.

For Chelsea, Mikel has been non-existent; Joe Cole and Lampard have been very quiet. Ferreira and Ashley Cole have been good for them but they need to show more than they have so far in the 1st half.

Sloppy piece of play in defense by 1st Eboue and then Fabregas as they almost conspired to give Chelsea a good chance but Toure saw off the threat of Shevchenko in the 46th minute.

Arsenal have not started the 2nd half well defensively at all as they keep giving the ball away or wanting too much time on the ball.

It's been a succession of very bad passes from too many players on both sides as they just keep giving the ball away rather surprisingly.

Adebayor and Eboue are just trying the almost impossible running into spaces with the ball that are not just there.

First sign of quality in the 2nd half as Joe Cole turns Flamini and plays a good ball to Shawn Wright-Phillips and his cross was not a bad 1 but eluded everyone.

Mikel finally makes a contribution to the game in the 60th minute as his very good shot was parried by Almunia but Shevchenko was not able to capitalize as his effort was weak and saved comfortably.

Fine break by Arsenal is again ruined by indecision by Eboue but in all fairness he did not have a lot of options in the penalty area in the 63rd minute.

Claudio Pizarro is on for Claude Makele in the 66th minute.

Joe Cole is booked for a foul on Eboue in the 68th minute.

Robin Van Persie is coming on for the injured Emmanuel Eboue in the 69th minute.

Good shot by Van Persie that is saved by Cech and Ben-Haim inexplicably played the ball to Cech that may have caused further damage but Cech cleared the ball for a throw-in in the 70th minute.

Another chance for Van Persie after good work by Hleb and Fabregas but his shot was awful in the 72nd minute.

Terrible miss by Shawn Wright-Phillips when Pizarro's cross fell to him with Almunia the only person to beat and the thrashes the ball well wide in the 75th minute.

Terrific break by Arsenal with Adebayor playing a great ball to Hleb, who in turn plays to Van Persie and he quite incredibly shoots over the crossbar in the 77th minute for a very bad miss.

Gilberto is on for Hleb in the 78th minute.

Slight chance for Chelsea but cleared by Clichy in the 80th minute.

Fantastic saving tackle by Ashley Cole on Adebayor in the 82nd minute as the Arsenal forward was bearing down on goal.

Chance for Chelsea in the 84th minute as Mikel was found by Joe Cole but his attempted cross was blocked by Toure.

Fantastic double save by Cech from Fabregas and Van Persie in the 87th minute.

Excellent opportunity for Shevchenko in the 89th minute but his header was very weak and comfortably saved by Almunia.

Free kick in a very dangerous position for Chelsea in the 91st minute as the referee gives a very generous kick against Gilberto on Mikel.

Good save by Almunia from a fiercely his free kick by Shevchenko in the 92nd minute.

Break for Arsenal but poor play by Van Persie as his ball to Fabregas was not very good and they had 4 other players joining up with the break but they made a mess of the situation in the 94th minute.

Another chance for Arsenal as Nicklas Bendtner, who came on for Adebayor played a good ball to Fabregas but he took too long and Cech saved but Ashley Cole and Fabregas were booked for a slight melee in the 95th minute.

Full Time

Arsenal 1 Chelsea 0

It was not a great game but it was an absorbing 1 with Chelsea playing some much better in the 2nd half and Arsenal not really hitting the heights but doing enough to win the game as they were marginally the better side overall and if they took their chances better, they may have won by a bigger margin.

In the 2nd half the quality of Hleb and Fabregas dropped considerably and that made players like Mikel to come more into the game while the excellent Flamini was able to snuff out any dangers posed from Chelsea.

Tomas Rosicky had perhaps his finest game in an Arsenal shirt but he still needs to cut out the unforced errors that creep into his game now and then.

Emmanuel Adebayor worked tirelessly for the cause and his unselfish work is appreciated by his colleagues and his fans even his finishing can be suspect at times.

There were a lot of good performances from Arsenal players but I have gone for Gael Clichy who put up a tireless and brilliant display.

Beginning Football 101

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

There certainly is a lot to learning football, but rest assured it can be done. Football has a language all its own, and just like any other language, it does take time to learn. All it takes is desire and a little patience, but trust me, it's all worth it.

Here are a few football basics to get you started:

1. Think of football as a game of "keep away". You want to be the one with the ball, because if you don't have the ball, you can't score. In football, when a team has the ball, it is on Offense, trying to score and when the opposing team has the ball, it is on Defense, trying to keep its opponent from scoring.

2. Defense wins championships! Much like other major sports, Defense is the key to winning. This is a statement that most sports experts would agree with. This goes against what most beginners think. After all, the object is to score more than your opponent, which means you need to have the stronger Offense, right? While it is true that the object is to outscore your opponent, it is vital that you have a strong Defense. In football, a team with a strong Defense not only stops its opponent from scoring, it provides opportunities for its own team's Offense to score.

3. Football is all about field position. Field position refers to where on the field the ball is. In football, a team attempts to move the ball down the field and score against its opponent, while trying to keep its opponent from doing the same. Ideally, a team wants the ball to be as far down the field as possible, because that means it is closer to scoring and its opponent is further away from scoring.

4. Time of possession is a critical factor in football. This refers to how long a team has possession of the ball throughout the game. For example, in a given game, one team may have possession of the ball for 35 minutes, and the other team for 25 minutes (there are 60 minutes in a professional football game). While no guarantee to winning, generally speaking, the team that has possession longer usually has the advantage - remember how we talked about "keep away" in the first point?

5. Turnovers are crucial. A turnover refers to when a team that has the ball (is on Offense), unwillingly turns possession of the ball over to its opponent through a fumble (losing possession of the football) or through an interception (throwing a pass intended for a teammate that is caught by an opposing player). Generally speaking, if a team has 2 turnovers or less in a game, it isn't so bad, but if it has 3 or more, this could spell trouble. As you will see turnovers can be the difference between winning and losing.

Hope this helps!

How to Properly Kick a Football

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you want to have a good kick off, you first need to learn about the proper techniques in kicking a foot ball. But knowing how to kick a football is just a part of the whole thing. You still need to know how to handle distractions from the opposing team. Having a great mental strength is a very important skill for being a football kicker. So what are the proper ways on how to kick a football?

When performing a kickoff or kicking a field goal, you need to set up the football before finally kicking it. Position it on the tee that is almost perpendicular to the ground. It should be a slightly angled toward you.

Next is to set up a field attempt that is if you want to score. Get to a holder kneel right on the opposite side of ball that you are running from. Place the football with the laces forward and away from you. The ball will then be almost perpendicular to the ground and slightly angled toward you. The holder on the other hand needs to place his palm or the tips of his index finger and middle fingers on the top side of the ball.

Third step is to take three steps back away from the ball. In case you will be using your left foot, take around two and a half steps to the right. If you are going to kick with your right, take two and a half steps also to the left. This will give you more focus on the ball so that you don't have to run on a curve patent but just straightly as you are going to kick it.

As you are going to run towards the ball before you kick it, start stepping on the foot that you aren't going to use for kicking. That way, the other one will gain force as you use go two and a half steps away from the ball. The last step would be for the kick.

Place the non-kicking leg steadily around 1 foot to the side of the football. Your foot will then be pointing in the direction on which you want the ball to go. This is if you are going for the goal post.

As you kick the ball, always keep in mind to kick with the top two inner shoelace holes of your shoe. That will create a maximum distance.

For putting a football, all you need to do is stand 15 yards from behind the scrimmage line and the catch the ball as the center will snap it to you. You need to hold the ball after that positioned horizontally in front of you with its laces pointing upward.

Take a whole two steps forward with you kicking foot in the beginning. Kick the ball as you drop it and use the top of your foot to kick as hard as you can. This will allow lots of flexibility.

That is how you kick a football. This is just the basic on how to kick a football, and you can learn more about the tips and techniques as you learn the entire law of the game.

Soccer Practice - Discover 3 New Techniques

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In soccer practice, it doesn't take a lot to teach and train different kinds of skills to players to get successful. The kids can be trained on three different kids of techniques. There's no significant difference in training the kids in soccer skills or some other technique. Different people call these teaching methods by different names. I call it as "FIG". It'll be described for you in the following paragraphs.

Foundation: In soccer training, this consists of the base upon which the team's coming stages and eventually the entire future as a team would rest. The lowest level trainings therefore form the basis of the game. It's necessary for every kid to know and learn these skills even when these are of no use in actual game. The team would be complete and versatile if it is based on a sound foundation follows a sound strategy.

Intermediate: I in FIG refers to intermediate. These are the middle level techniques that are necessary in attaching the basics with the game skills. So we must know that the mid level techniques and actual game skills are very different in nature. In soccer coaching, the intermediate skills differ from the game skills. But they pave the way to building the actual game skills.

Game: G refers to the skills that are necessary for a player to learn for playing the game. These are the essential skills that are necessary for all players to learn so as to perform in live matches.

In soccer drills, it's always beneficial to adopt the method of demonstration and performance. This means that you follow a standard teaching format of giving an introduction, then explaining the body, and wrapping up with the conclusion. In soccer practice, tell the players what you intend to coach them about. Then do those particular things which will help them imitate it. And then ask them to do it.

Educating has three important basics; one, kids must be instructed how to do something. Let them know the skill and alongside, teach them on how this will improve their game. Then, it must be demonstrated to them as to how to perform that trick. Show the players the skill or technique you wish them to learn. It's a well accepted fact that kids learn fast by watching.

In the end, make the kids put into practice the skills. Sufficient time must be allowed to the kids so that can practice the game. It is fine to repeat things as required so that they learn. Do not speak a lot. Rather emphasize more on demonstration and practice.

To end, tell them how was their performance in soccer practice. Also educate them about the steps needed by the players to perk up their performance. Put this to the test right away and I promise, you'll be amazed at the amount of ease and success it brings to your regime.

Women's Soccer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Women's soccer is unlike the usual association football that's played by men. The soccer for women only transpired in recent years. Around the world, there are so few professional leagues about soccer for women that appeared in the course of time. Only amateur games and tournaments for women transpired, not until the first professional women's team showed up. They are the initial modern professional soccer team that composed of women; the United States Women's Team became the pioneers of professional soccer around the world. They played their very first match during the year 1985. It was held in Japan where there was a sponsored league named the L League that hosted friendly games.

Though the women's football is not as popular as compared to men's football, there is a noticeable growing following for the former. Interest in soccer has been increasing around the world including the United States, which was formerly disinclined to the sport. In fact, the Women's United Soccer Association is formed in the United States during early 2000s. It became women's very first all-professional league in football. Today, there have been football leagues for women around the world like the W-League, Superliga Femenina in Spain, Women's National Soccer League in Australia, Toppserien in Norway, Women's Bundesliga in Germany and Austria. WUSA organizers have mentioned their intention to prelaunch as the Women's Professional Soccer in 2009.

When speaking of the Olympics, women's teams are free enough due to the abandonment of the restrictions. The Olympics would turn out to be a FIFA World Cup as to the application of the rules to women's soccer.

Football Drills - Team Drills for Offense

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Introduction

Drills are an essential aspect of football practice. Not only do football drills establish a firm foundation in players, they also prepare players to succeed during games.

While many football drills are focused on individual positions, team drills are important in improving techniques in situations encountered in team play. The following drills have been created to hone the necessary skills in a successful offense.

Hustle Drill

For this team drill, start by spotting the ball at the 40 yard-line and huddling the starting unit for the offensive side at the midfield. The quarterback calls the play as signaled by the coach. The starting unit then lines up and executes the play.

When the ball has been thrown or the ball carrier breaks through the line, the entire offense (not just the starting line) runs to the endzone and huddles around the ball carrier. The ball carrier breaks the huddle by calling "1-2-3" and everyone responding "score."

The drill then repeats from the endzone to the 40 yard-line. The coach should rotate the players frequently and either keep track of time or the number of plays completed to ensure hustle.

Unrecovered Receiver Drill

This drill was created to help the quarterback and wide receivers recognize when they are not being covered by the defense and take advantage of the situation with an automatic pass.

Begin by forming the offensive formation to be worked on at the line. Back-up offensive players can play defense.

The defense lines up with the coach signaling for one defender to be out of correct position. The quarterback and wide receiver then assess the defense and execute the uncovered release and automatic pass accordingly.

Triple Option Mesh in Chutes

This drill combines a quarterback and fullback mesh drill with a line chute to simulate a game-like scenario for midline and triple option plays. For a play to the right, line the center and quarterback on the left side of the chute, the center under the chute (with the right guard and right tackle) and the quarterback just behind the chute.

Scout players then set up in an odd or even front and the coach gives the defender the stunt for the quarterback to read. Players should run the play as they would without the chute, only using the chute to remind them to stay low.

Female Football Jerseys

Monday, October 18, 2010

For generations, football is proverbially considered to be a man's sport. In the past even there are few female fans of football because of the violence of the game and also because they never get known the rules. But it changes. As there are more and more women like the football game and more and more women like playing football, there comes out the women's cry. That when once there were male football sport jerseys on the market that women can just buy those over size, females cry for more fashion for their football jerseys' look.

Now there are really many female sports fans just as enthusiastic about their favorite NFL teams as guys. Just the same as men, women also want to express their enthusiasm by wearing sports jerseys themed with their favorite teams or adorned with the numbers and names of their favorite players. In the past, those oversize men's sizes and cuts could fit women. Then there is really a fashion statement of female NFL jerseys needed.

Fortunately, there are really someone in those big manufacture companies noticing this, recognizing that women constitute a good portion of their fan bases. Women are really longing for jerseys that reflect women's enthusiasm for sports, but that also have a feminine twist. Gradually, women sports fans are finding that there are lots of NFL jerseys made especially with women in mind. Now you can find pink jerseys, vibrant jerseys, fashion jerseys or glittering jerseys from virtually any team in the NFL. However, it is safe to say that women's fashion on sports jerseys is really making a splash in the sports world that those chic females jerseys are giving women fans one more thing to cheer about.

Moreover, there also have been some female football teams, women football clubs organized. There women are really in this sport world. But still these female teams are not mixed with male teams. However, it is really a cheerful thing for those chic female jerseys. Women can also enjoying the football matches wearing their pretty jerseys themed with their favorite team or players! That is a big progress and more will be hoped.

Dubai Sports City - Is There A Demand For The Worlds First Sports City?

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

At present, there is not much to look at, just numerous signs from the developers showing iconic sporting images alongside the early signs of the construction process. It's hard to believe that in only a few years time, this dusty part of Dubai on the Emirates Road will become home to one of the worlds premier sporting destinations, Dubai Sports City.

So what is Dubai Sports City? Described as a true city of firsts, Dubai Sports City will become the worlds first 'Sports City,' a destination totally devoted to sport and all it entails. Over 50 million square feet of state of the art stadia and venues alongside academies from some of sports leading names such as Manchester United soccer Schools, ICC Global Cricket Academy, David Lloyd Tennis and the Butch Harmon School of Golf. Dedicated to showcasing the very finest that sport has to offer today, and developing the sporting hero's of tomorrow.

In addition to the world class sporting facilities, Dubai Sports City will also include a wide range of residential and commercial developments expected in a world class city. Luxurious properties and world class international schools sit alongside the hotels and first class medical facilities. A true community lifestyle, in close proximity to one of the worlds leading sporting destinations.

There are a wide range of properties available in Dubai Sports City, ranging from luxury villas through to state of the art apartments ensure that the city has something to offer every taste and budget. Property developments such as the Cube and the Canal Residences have already been heavily invested in by both investors and residents alike, all keen to be a part of this truly iconic project in Dubai.

So is there a demand for Dubai Sports City, and what does the future hold for a project such as this? In order to answer this, it is necessary to evaluate the potential of this project in a number of differing contexts.

Firstly, it's location in Dubailand, in the heart of modern day Dubai, and one of the world's fastest growing economies. Today, modern day Dubai is a modern, liberal, thriving economy, attracting large levels of investment from overseas as well as increasing numbers of residents from all over the world. Attracted by factors including the tax free status and increasing property values, Dubai is benefiting from one of the worlds fastest growing GDP's. This consistent growth in both the population and the economy has seen a sustained level of demand for property in Dubai, which seems set to continue for the near future. This demand has seen unparalleled levels of interest in property in Dubai Sports City and key developments in Dubai.

The second factor to consideration when looking at the demand and future for Dubai Sports City, is the growth, and increasing affluence of visitors to Dubai. Recent figures released by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing in Dubai have shown hotel occupancy rates reaching levels in excess of 85%, with the highest fill rates (over 90%) being found in the 5 star hotel category. To summarise, the increasing numbers of visitors to Dubai (estimated to be approximately 15 million by 2010), are increasingly wealthy with higher levels of disposable income. Iconic and unique projects such as Dubai Sports City will undoubtedly prove highly attractive to visitors to Dubai, as they seek activities outside of the traditional venues of the beach and shopping malls.

The third, and arguably most important factor for consideration is the changing face of sport itself, in particular the increasing globalisation of major sports such as golf, tennis and football. Today, the modern day sports fan has access to an increasing array of sports. The advent of satellite television in particular has ensured that a Premier League football match in London may be watched by an audience of billions around the world. Today, Premier League games are regularly broadcast to over 600 million homes in 202 countries throughout the world. This level of access to a wide variety of sports has never been seen before, and is giving birth to a new, wider generation of global sports fan.

These global fans, who are spending increasing amounts of money to access sporting events around the world are likely to see Dubai Sports City as a leading global sports venue, offering them access to their sporting hero's who are usually based thousands of miles away. Already leading sports teams have chosen Dubai Sports City as a future venue for training camps and touring or pre-season matches. Should Dubai successfully bid for the Olympic Games (it is rumoured that they are considering a bid), then the global focus on Dubai Sports City will intensify even further.

Given the above factors, it seems that the future is indeed bright for Dubai Sports City, and as the development slowly starts to take shape, it will become an increasingly important part of the global sports landscape.

Football - Rules, Rules and More Rules

Football is a great game. Watching two teams out on the football field, offense and defense, is like watching two generals commanding their armies. So many possibilities; play books three inches thick; men the size of trucks; and the stadiums filled with people, some of whom had to wait six years to get tickets. And with all the excitement, all the suspense at that last second field goal and all the great players...

There are enough rules in this game to make you want to pull every last hair out of your head.

The typical lay person, the casual football fan and even some of the bigger fans, probably don't know half the rules of the game. Yeah, they know the main rules, four downs to make a first down and things like that, but the more complicated rules have many fans wondering what is going on half the time. Even the refs can many times be seen standing around trying to figure out which rule of the game was broken, if any at all. And what it more than one rule was broken? How is that situation settled?

Even the rules on contact with a receiver are so fuzzy, or not enforced the same by each set of refs. Some games will go by and you'll see a receiver get clobbered beyond the five yard mark and nothing gets called and then in another game the defender will simply brush up against his sleeve and get called for pass interference. A little consistency would be nice. Certainly that doesn't help the situation any.

One of the most confusing rules is whether or not a receiver had possession when catching a pass before going out of bounds. Technically, he's supposed to have both feet in bounds when he makes the catch. If he catches the ball with one foot in and then takes a step and has the other foot out, it's no catch. But what it he's pushed out of bounds? Would he have caught the ball with both feet in had he not been pushed? How is that situation handled?

Then of course there is the matter of actually scoring a touchdown. The football has to cross the plain of the goal line. Now, if the offensive player is on the ground when he scores, it's pretty easy to tell if he crossed the goal line. But what if he's on top of a pile up, four feet off the ground as he's trying to dive in? How do you figure out if he's crossed the plain?

Then of course there is forward motion when a running back gets tackled. If he gets hit by a 350 pound truck and gets sent hurtling five yards back, where is the ball marked? Does it get marked where the tackler hit him or where he lands? What if he trips? Can he get up and start running again? If he trips and one foot goes out of bounds, can he start running again?

So many questions and we haven't even scratched the surface of the surface of all the rules of football. Yes, this game can really give you a headache.

Football - The Basics

Friday, October 1, 2010

To assume that everybody knows and understands the game of football would be a foolish thing to do since it is such a complicated game. And while we're not going to dive in depth into the game in this article, we are going to go over some of the basics of the game itself so that you have a pretty decent idea of how it's played.

The game of football is played on a field marked off with hash marks. Each hash across the field represents one yard from the hash before it. There are 98 of these hash marks plus two goal line marks for a total of 100 yards. Just past the goal lines are goal posts. These actually serve a function which we'll get to shortly.

The object of the game is for one team to move the football from one end of the field all the way down to the other and cross the opposing goal line. If they manage to do this they score six points. After they do this they then get a chance to score extra points either by kicking the ball between the goal post uprights (that's what they are there for) or by passing the ball or running the ball over the goal line again. If they kick the ball over they get one point. If they run the ball in or pass the ball in they get two points. There is also the option of trying for a field goal if they think they can't get the ball over the goal line. A field goal will give the team three points.

There are certain restrictions placed on the offensive team (the one trying to score) when attempting to get their points. They have to be able to move the ball at least 10 yards for every four times they attempt to move the ball, called a down. If they don't get the 10 yards within the four downs they turn the ball over to the other team. As long as they keep getting the 10 yard minimum they hold onto the ball until they either score or fail to get their 10 yards.

The team on the other end of the ball, called the defense, has to try to keep the team with the ball from scoring. They have many options open to them in order to do this. They can tackle a runner who is carrying the ball, a pass receiver who has caught a pass or try to physically take the ball away form the other team, either by causing a fumble or intercepting a pass.

If no team has a higher score by the end of four quarters, each of which are 15 minutes long, then they have one quarter of overtime and play until one team scores. If neither team scores then the game ends in a tie. Yes, football is one of those games where you can have ties.

These are obviously just very basic rules and the game itself is a lot more complicated than what you see here. In future articles we'll dive more deeply into the game itself, including football strategy.
