Life and Baseball is a Game of Inches

Saturday, January 29, 2011

Congratulations to the Major League Baseball World Series Champions, the New York Yankees! Champions of 27 World Series! Wow!!

I have been a fan and student of the game of baseball since I was four years old. I have been fortunate to play for some outstanding coaches, and played with some great players. These days I have the unbelievable joy of coaching my sons and their friends in Little League baseball.

There are a many things that standout to me in baseball that have been great life lessons for me. I am listing a few for you as you play in your own world series each day in business and life. You are already in the major leagues of life and you are your own MVP(most valuable player) every day.

Baseball/life is a game of inches whether you are running bases, fielding a ball, or covering the plate with a pitch or your bat. Manage those inches in advance, be efficient, get the first inch advantage.
Baseball/life is a game where success is not an all time thing. You can make the Hall of Fame by being a successful hitter 4 out 10 at bats. Sometimes you have to keep fouling off pitches, but by all means, make sure you step up to the plate to take your swings.
The more successful hitters in baseball/life visualize the pitch they are going to hit and where they will hit it, before they step into the batter's box. They know what to expect.
Becoming an expert at the little things, the fundamentals of the game is what makes the difference between the good players and the great ones. The great players make the routine plays.
Practice is for working hard, testing your limits, pushing yourself so that the game time is easy and fun. You have to love to practice as much as you love the game.
To be a great winner, you have to be able to lose with class, compliment your opponent, and prepare for the next meeting so you can learn from your defeat.

These lessons are powerful. There are many more that I have taken as notes in my life. May you use these lessons to achieve your status of MVP today.

Soccer Shooting Techniques

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Some people possess a natural goal scoring skill, an uncanny ability to know where the goal is and can take that awe-inspiring shot without looking at the goal. However scoring goals is one thing that takes work and becoming an expert at several forms of soccer shots can help any player be a natural goal scorer. This informative article will talk about some of the several types of soccer shots like the full volley, half-volley, instep, and swerve shot.

The full volley can certainly produce a strong shot which is usually very hard to save. This shot may be very challenging get on goal but if so, it is very effective. You need to hit the ball correctly and in right moment. If you fail to do so, the ball will often end 20 yards behind the goal. This kind of shot is ideal when you experience several opponents running in your direction as the ball is falling from the sky. Perhaps the most common situation is when the ball is cleared away from a corner kick and you're positioned about 5-10 yards from your penalty box line.

A half volley is like the full volley except that you will first get control on the ball and then fire the shot. This is also why a half volley can be a better solution for long range shots because you are able to receive, aim and fire the shot while the opponents are not really prepared. However, remember that beating the keeper with a 30 yard shot really requires a great deal of skill. But, I've seen people score goals from 70 yard using the half volley so it is possible. Like with almost every other soccer shot it's not necessary to overdo it. Instead, try it twice but not in excess of three times per game.

A goalkeeper's most difficult nightmare is known as the swerve shot. This particular shot will swerve once you fire it and to save it requires a great deal of effort. However, learning how to execute a swerving shot is actually difficult and not many players across the world can perform it in high tempo. However, you should still practice it and try it out in real games because failure is vital to success.

One common denominator with all forms of shots is learning to shoot without stopping the ball. Stopping the ball can be time intensive and a more alert defender/goalkeeper can take the ball away from you. In practice you will need to emphasize quick shots. Make certain to use drills that support the very idea of moving while shooting. There are plenty of soccer shooting drills that might emphasize this skill.

Alabama Football

Monday, January 24, 2011

Alabama Football has a rich history that dates back almost 70 years. They have been dominant program in college football during that time frame. They have won the most championships of any NCAA football team in the history of the game with twelve. Football is a religion in Alabama and the "Roll Tide" is at the center of attention on any given Saturday.

Alabama came into national prominence when the program was taken over by head coach Wallace Wade. Wade was a Brown alum who took over a program that had struggled in recent years. However, with Wade's coaching prowess and the help of his athletic director, the school was bringing in athletes from all over the country and not just Alabama. This is a trend that became very popular with schools across the country and a trend that continues today. Wade led the school to two national championships during his eight years as head coach at Alabama, however it was the first championship in 1926 that put the team on the map and they have remained ever since. After Wade left, it was almost a revolving door of coaches; however, they managed to win four more national championships with Athletic Director George Denny, for whom the Alabama stadium is named after, at the helm over the football program.

Alabama struggled in the early fifties and were starting to lose credibility as a college football powerhouse, however that all changed in 1958. In 1958, Paul "Bear" Bryant took over this struggling program and turned them into arguably the most successful football program in the history of NCAA football. Bryant would coach the team for 24 years before retiring in January 1983. During his time as head coach the Alabama football team seemed almost unbeatable. They won 6 national championship and 13 conference championships during his time as head coach. His Alabama teams won 232 games during his 24 years as head coach. Bryant retired following the 1982 Liberty Bowl as arguably the greatest college football coach of all-time. Ironically enough when asked what he would do now that he was retired; he said that he would probably croak in a week. Four weeks later Bryant died of a heart attack. However, the legacy of Bryant still lives today and all Alabama coaches have been compared to him.

Since Bryant left the Crimson Tide there have been many coaches that have tried to create the greatness that he brought to the Alabama program, however in the 27 years since his departure they have only won one national championship and two conference championship, with no national titles since 1992. However, with the hiring of Nick Saban in 2007, the school has a newfound confidence not seen since the days of Bryant. The Crimson Tide still remains one of the most respected teams in all of college football and probably will because of the impact Bryant had on the program.

Sports betting on the internet has truly revolutionized the way people are able to enjoy and profiting from betting on everything from team sports, like NBA, football, MLB to big events like horse racing and World Rally.

Online sports betting really is on another level to going down to the bookies or actually going to one of the sports event. From your comfortable seat at home with a computer and the power of the internet you can research things such as players, teams and find out how they've done in previous games all in a matter of minutes. Probably one of the best examples of this would have to be the racing post. You can find out the form for the last few races, tips and tipsters, jockey details, best odds across all the bookmakers, graphs of latest price trend and so much more. You will have to visit the site and see it for yourself if you're a serious punter.

Another good example would probably be the MLB, Major league Baseball. Sports betting online for the mlb can potentially be very lucrative. On betus.com, you can see all the MLB lines and betting odds, you can see the spread, and times of events everywhere. When you click to see the team details, it goes to a sub-site where you can view team reports, matchup, game preview, injuries and all your current wagers on the event.

So In a nutshell, sports betting has become a very good way of making lots of money thanks to the internet, as it's still in its relatively early stages, it's going to develop and become even greater and even more profitable. So if your thinking about sports betting for a living, know this. It works, It's very profitable, it's very easy, lots of people do it as a "full-time job" with the added power of the internet and wealth of information to follow. You're well set.

Major League Baseball Playoffs - Is There a Better Way?

Friday, January 21, 2011

Being that it is October and the postseason of Major League Baseball is currently in progress, I thought that I'd devote a few moments of my time to share my thoughts with all of you about some alternative ways Major League Baseball could use, or has used, to promote a great postseason experience for everyone. I firmly believe there are a number of scenarios that could improve the game. I'm going to share three of those scenarios with you, and also, I'll be sharing some pros and cons of each scenario. You may also learn some history and facts about Major League Baseball that you may not have already known previous to reading this post.

First, let's discuss Major League Baseball's current postseason format.

Right now, Major League Baseball operates under the new "Divisional Play Rules," which, when restructured following the 1994 player strike, state that there are to be three divisions in each league, the East, West and Central Divisions. The team with the best win-loss record in each division after the regular season ends will compete in the playoffs, and one Wild Card team (the team in each league with the best win-loss record out of all the teams who did not win a Division Title) will compete in the playoffs. The current MLB playoffs consist of a Divisional Series (best-of-five games), a League Championship Series (best-of-seven games) and World Series (best-of-seven games). Typically, the #1 seed (Division Champion with the best regular season record) plays the #4 seed (Wild Card) and the #2 seed (Division Champion with the 2nd best record) plays the #3 seed (Division Champion with the 3rd best record) in the initial, Divisional Series. Four total Divisional Series take place, two in each league. The winners of each Divisional Series will compete with each other in their corresponding league's Championship Series. Two total League Championship Series will take place, one in each league. The winner of each series is crowned as either National League Champions or as American League Champions, depending on the league in which they compete. Each will represent their respective league in the World Series. The winner of the World Series is crowned as the World Champion of Baseball.

Your probably also wondering how Major League Baseball determines which teams will host certain games of each series, and how many games each team will host. Home-field advantage is based strictly on regular season records, but this only holds true in the Divisional Series and the League Championship Series. The #1 seed in each league entering the playoffs has clinched home-field advantage for their entire league playoffs. If the #1 seed is eliminated following Divisional Series play, the team with the next best record who is not a Wild Card will hold home-field advantage for the League Championship Series. A Wild Card team can NEVER hold home-field advantage during league playoffs. Usually, teams in each Divisional Series follow a 2-2-1 format (the team with home-field advantage hosts the first two games and, if necessary, the final game of the series), but this can vary depending on the length of the series that the top seeded team chooses to play (the top seeded team of each series can decide on the length of over how many days the games of the series take place). For example, the top seed can choose to have the series played over a total of 5 games in 6 days or a total of 5 games in 8 days. This choice could ultimately change the format of the series, which is at Major League Baseball's discretion. The League Championship Series ALWAYS follows a 2-3-2 format (team with home-field advantage hosts the first two games, and, if necessary, the final two games.) The length of over how many days the series is played and, also, which days the teams do not play is decided by Major League Baseball. Again, the team with the best regular season record who is not a Wild Card will hold home-field advantage for the LCS.

The topic of home-field advantage in the World Series has become one of the most hotly debated issues in the sports world. Previous to 2003, the two teams competing in the Fall Classic decided who held home-field advantage based on who had the best regular season record. This was soon dramatically changed. Following 2002, Major League Baseball, and Commissioner Bud Selig, ruled that the All-Star Game each July would determine which league would hold home-field advantage in the World Series each October. This was, in large part, due to the All-Star Game disaster that took place in July 2002. During that game, which was held at Miller Park in Milwaukee, both mangers approached Commissioner Selig during the 7th inning and informed him that they were both out of players. Selig ruled that the game would end, right then, in a tie. In my opinion, Commissioner Selig had no other choice. Had he kept the game going, players would have been at an increased risk for injury and pitchers would have been overthrown, affecting their respective team's strategy in the weeks following the All-Star Game. This decision resulted in much criticism from the press, players, and fans. Baseball had to do something to prevent this occurrence from ever happening again. So, the Commissioner, owners, board members, and MLB Player's Association (MLBPA) heads got together to figure out a solution. The result: the All-Star game would determine home-field advantage each season for the World Series. The game was actually going to mean something more than just plain old bragging rights, and, in addition, extra players would be added to the rosters of each league's team. This final decision resulted in even more criticism than that of the decision to end the game in a tie. I do not personally believe that making the game count was the best move, but that's a topic for a future post. The All-Star Game was meant, simply, to be an exciting experience and a terrific opportunity for fans and players. People believed that Major League Baseball's decision to make the game count demeaned the actual intentions the league had when it began the playing of the Summer Classic in 1933. (The All-Star Game began as a fun addition to the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois. It was the brainchild of The Chicago Tribune sports editor, Arch Ward. The game has grown into one of the most prolific events in professional sports. In the years following Major League Baseball's acceptance of the infamous game, every single professional sport in America has followed with its own variation of an All-Star Game.)

Anyhow, the World Series ALWAYS follows the 2-3-2 format, and home-field advantage is decided based on the result of the All-Star Game. The league that wins the Summer Classic will give their league champion home-field advantage in the Fall Classic. The "Designated Hitter Rule" is in effect when playing at an American League park (the "DH rule" was initiated in 1973 by the American League as a solution to having a much lower attendance rate than their counterpart National League). The rule is another controversial one, and it is one that I absolutely despise. It contradicts the first rule in the book of baseball. Rule 1.1 (Official Major League Rulebook) states that "baseball is a game of two teams, each side consisting of a total of nine players." When the "DH rule" is in effect, it is in direct violation of Rule 1.1. Again, the World Series is a best-of-seven game series. The first team to win four games is crowned as World Champion.

Now that you are familiar with the current Major League Baseball postseason setup, here are three other possible scenarios baseball could go with, or once had gone with:

Scenario #1, "The Purist's Way": Previous to 1969 (the season in which Divisional Play began), the team in each league with the best win-loss record after the regular season would meet in the only playoff series of the year, the World Series. There are no Divisional Series or League Championship Series played when using this format. This format was used from 1901 (the first season in which a World Series was held) to 1968 (the final season of non-Divisional play). Baseball purists are almost always advocates of this format, as it was the first format ever used to crown a champion between the two competing leagues. A TON of arguments can be used when debating whether or not this format was a useful one. First off, purists argue that having only one team make the playoffs from each league results in a much more exciting and competitive regular season. They argue that a Wild Card team has no place in the playoffs and that Wild Card teams are winning and competing in too many World Series because of the current postseason format. Purists also argue that this is the way Major League Baseball had intended when crowning a World Champion.

Because of the way in which money and economic status dominate the game in modern times, owners and investors of the game have a much more formidable argument as to why this format is no good: including more teams in the postseason will result in a greater amount of profits from ticket sales, advertisements, and other resources. With more teams participating in October baseball, there are more games being played. This directly results in much, much more money being made from ads in the stadium and through alternative viewing platforms (such as television, the internet, 3G devices, and Apple Inc.'s iPod), a greater number of tickets sold because there are more games being played, and much greater non-ticket profits from a variety of team merchandise, concession sales, and also via franchise bonuses from Major League Baseball. Also, with more teams in the postseason, more organizations are able to present their "product" (or team) to a wider variety of consumers. Instead of their game only being broadcasted regionally, team's games are broadcast to the entire nation and to different parts of the world. This attracts newer fans in huge numbers, something every MLB organization is trying to accomplish in attempting to compete in the playoffs.

Purists cannot stand the argument of business and economics being brought into the conversation of the game. They believe that baseball was never about the money and, also, that baseball being promoted as such a big-time, big money-making business is demeaning to the game itself. In reality, professional baseball is all about making money. The game going professional was a business venture that investors used to reel in the big bucks, although most want to believe that the formation of Major League Baseball held other meanings. Once again, every professional sport, baseball included, is all about making money. That is why "The Purist's Way" will never again be considered as a legitimate format for Major League Baseball playoffs.

Scenario #2, "The Pre-Divisional Series Format": If more games being played can result in even higher profits, why not incorporate more games, more teams, and maybe a whole new series into the postseason? This type of scenario is one that is not usually discussed when debating alternative MLB playoff formats, however, I'm not sure why. After all, the three other major professional sports in America (NFL, NBA, and NHL) have all incorporated an extra playoff series (NBA and NHL) or an extra week of playoff games (NFL) into their league's playoff formats. All three sports have done so in different variations, but based on the same profitable concept. All recognized that a significant amount of money could be made by expanding on their sport's playoff format. This theory has worked out exceptionally well for each sport, and it has resulted, not only in the expansion of each respective sport, but, in a profit increase for each team competing, as well as a profit increase for each individual league. This scenario also gives more teams more opportunities to get involved in the postseason. The greater probability of making the playoffs excites most fans and tends to encourage more fans to frequently follow up on how their favorite team is doing. If a team has fans that believe their team has a chance, those fans are going to come to the games more often. They may also tune into alternative viewing platforms, which could result in higher profits via advertisements.

Purists argue that allowing more teams into the postseason, once again, results in a much less competitive regular season. They also argue that when you allow too many teams into the playoffs, there will be significant numbers of sub-par teams that do not belong. The purists that buy into the concept of baseball as a business say that fans will not turn out to as many regular season games, believing the season is less competitive and far less important when you allow more teams into the playoffs. Purists deny that this scenario would be effective when considering baseball, although most purists intensely reject change to the game itself. There are many examples that lead me to believe that this scenario might actually work and be good for baseball.

The National Basketball Association is a prime example of this scenario being put to good use. The NBA decided, just recently, to incorporate an extra playoff series into their postseason format. The league came together and came up with the idea to add Conference Quarterfinals to the postseason. This decision resulted in a total of four extra teams from around the league being able to compete in the NBA's playoffs each and every year. The decision to expand on their playoff format has led to good results for the NBA and for the game of basketball. Not only is more money being made, but the league is attracting a significant amount of new basketball fans. Take China for example. There are now an estimated 300 million basketball fans there now. That's the entire United States population! The growth of the booming NBA market can be linked to the idea of expanding the playoffs. Of all major basketball broadcasts in China, over 60 percent are related to the NBA postseason. Generating millions of new fans provides a much larger consumer base that the league and its teams can profit from and draw upon. When new markets are created, there are millions upon billions of dollars of profit that have just been created as well.

Let's also not forget how exciting the new NBA playoffs have become. The NBA playoffs provide some of the most improbable, stunning and exciting games of the year in sports. I'd also like to point out that having longer playoffs may also weed out the teams that do not belong. An NBA team must win a total of 16 games over four best-of-seven playoff series. Winning that consistently is what separates the good teams from the great teams, and it may also result in the sub-par teams eventually being eliminated. In a long playoff format, teams must prove themselves. This is the answer to the purist's belief that too many sub-par teams are let in via this scenario.

NBA playoff series, as well as NHL playoff series, all consist of best-of-seven game formats. This brings us to our next type of scenario.

Scenario #3, "The Seven Game Divisional Series": For the last decade, ever since the institution of the Divisional Series, people have been arguing over the length of the five-game playoff. They want to know why the series is so short and why it's not the same length as the other two MLB postseason series that are now in effect. The only answers to these questions that I can provide is that the series is so short due to Major League Baseball and the MLBPA being iffy when finalizing the decision to expand with a Divisional Series. At the time this decision was made, the process of purifying the game of baseball was at a high point and was, you could say, on Major League Baseball's "to-do list." You may not believe this fact because of the amount of change that took place following the 1994 player strike. But just take into consideration that the idea of keeping the game pure may have been on the minds of people who factored into making the final decision to change the playoff format. These people of Major League Baseball faced the daunting task of trying to devise a plan to increase profits as a direct result of the players demanding higher wages. This, while trying not to upset baseball fans by enforcing too much change. Before the players declared a strike, fans were horrified by the thought that baseball may never again be the same. Major League Baseball knew this. They had to find a way to keep everyone happy. They did not want to over-expand the postseason, so they increased the number of games that would be played in the League Championship Series and equaled the number of games played in the Divisional Series to that of the League Championship Series from 1969 to 1993. By doing such a thing, Major League Baseball felt they had found a way to sufficiently increase profits while not interfering too much with the pureness of the game. (I'm still unable to answer why the LCS was a short five games when that type of format was instituted in 1969. I can say that pre-World Series playoff series were a brand new concept to Major League Baseball at the time, and the pureness factor has to also be considered. Keeping the game pure had to be even more important to baseball then when compared to the 1994-95 format changes. The postseason had been virtually the same for nearly 68 years up to that point, except for the change in the length of the World Series from nine games to seven games in 1920. At the time when playoff format was changed and expanded for the first time ever, changes in season routines were unheard of, as well as unwanted. Baseball had to do whatever it could as to not affect the routine too much, just like in 1994-95.)

Now that the acceptance of the current MLB postseason format has taken full effect, why not match the idea of the other major professional sports by making the number of games played in each series an equal one? Most believe that five games are not currently enough to decide on a series victor. I, for one, believe that the five-game Divisional Series has resulted in way too many Wild Card teams winning the World Series or, for that matter, even competing in the World Series. Remember the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals? That team won a total of 83 games in the regular season. 83 games! What a pitiful win percentage for a playoff team (.512). They entered the postseason as the #4 seeded Wild Card team in the National League and they proceeded to become World Champions. If you look at their performance in the Divisional Series, you might think that if there had been an extra two games added to the series (meaning the organization would have had to win one more game), the Cardinals would not have advanced. This concept can be applied to several teams playing in the Divisional Series since 1995. Adding two extra games to the Divisional Series may quiet the baseball purists who are against the outrageous number of Wild Card teams getting into and winning the World Series. Also, adding two more games would, again, increase profits, although not by much as it is just two more games in a series.

The facts are that while the game of baseball itself and the way the game is played have so greatly evolved, the players, owners, league, and fans have all resisted other changes that have been imposed upon the game.

There are many who love the game because of its spontaneity, and then, there are many who love the game for its immortal legends. There are some who hate baseball for what it has become, and there are some who hate baseball for what it once was. There are purists and then there are modernists, statisticians and enthusiasts. There are owners and there are managers. There are players, critics, and fans. There is umpiring and there is official scoring. There are organizations, franchises, associations, and teams from cities big and small. The game has seen rage from a fierce competitor who once beat a man in the stands who had no hands, it has seen a nation fall in love with the right arm of a cool-headed pitcher who preached spirituality, a man who was so adored that his hometown now devotes an entire holiday in his honor. It has seen two best-friends from different walks of life put on a home-run display unlike any other, only for that summer to soon be forgotten because of the two men's appearances in front of grand juries in order to explain their alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. The game saw a nation provide no appreciation for a man they all hated, a man who broke the most hallowed record in all of sports. The hate was all because they believed he used drugs to alter his performance.

Baseball is a game that saw a 1922 Supreme Court ruling be upheld, a ruling that stated the game was, somehow, not interstate commerce, thus, becoming the first business to be exempt from a group of laws that no business had, or has, ever beat. It also saw a group of eight men, "Black Sox" if you will, have to appear in court because they were believed to having accepted money to throw the 1919 World Series. The game has seen a player hit a home run to win a World Series just twice, both times a feat that lifted the respective cities to the top of the sporting world. It has seen a team win a World Championship an unprecedented 26 times, watched another team win its first World Championship in over 86 years, and it has witnessed one team suffer a miserable 100 years, and counting, without winning a single World Championship for themselves or for their beloved city. The game saw a team fall behind three games to none in a League Championship Series, only to come storming back and win the series in seven games, a feat never before accomplished. Baseball twice has seen a team finish with the worst record in the league one season, and then finish with the best record in the league the following season. Baseball has seen just three men hit over 700 home runs, one of which became the face of baseball forever as he captured the essence of an ever-changing sport. He was a man who helped a country forget about its greatest economic demise with only the crack of his bat.

The game of baseball has seen the good and the bad. However, it is a game that can never be matched. It is a game that has defined a country through thick and thin, and it is a game people turned to when they needed more than help. It is the only game in which its legends will be forever immortalized for what they did on the field, and often times, for what they did off of it. Perhaps the postseason format that baseball decides upon will never again change, and maybe it doesn't even make a difference. Whatever happens, we will always know that the game's history is written with every pitch, and, we hope that the game will be there for us when we face darker times; we hope it is there for us just as it has been for the last 150 years. We hope when we do have trouble in life there will be something we can turn to, and we hope that answer will be the game of baseball.

Baseball may just be a game, but it's a game that has held a special place in the hearts of billions of people ever since its creation. Baseball is unlike anything else we know of. For that reason, the game's significance will never be compared to anything else, ever.

Pre-Season Football Strength Workout

A quick Pre-Season Football Strength Training Workout...4-Days Pre-Game...

Pre-Season football workouts are a source of a lot of anxiety for many football players...they simply don't know what to do or how much of it to do! To make things easier, here is a pre-season football strength workout. This will also help you hold on to the muscle and bulk you gained in the off-season.

This was a hybrid session, part Rep Effort Upper and part Sub-Max Effort Upper.

Because we have out first actual game situation scrimmage Saturday, I went easy.

One thing people tend to forget about pre and in-season training is that you have to adjust your workouts constantly. Even if the practices are fairly "easy" they are still taking their toll on your joints. But, you can't just skip your workouts...you worked all year for strength and speed, don't blow it by being lazy at this critical time.

Most football players fall into two groups:

1. Those who do no training at all and lose their strength and speed

2. Those who Train to hard, too heavy, too frequently and lose their strength and speed

Don't lose your focus, all of your training is aimed at:

Getting Stronger
Getting Faster
Getting Bigger
Becoming a better football player..

While we borrow from their sports, we are not Powerlifters or Strongmen or Bodybuilders...we are football players and all efforts must be focused on improving your game.

So, you need to find that medium where you are still getting stronger and faster pre and in-season without over doing it and hurting your football skills.

A good rule of thumb is to shoot for 80 - 85% on ME Movements during this time. Beginners can get away with 75 - 80%, more advanced guys will fall in around 85. This allows you to go fairly heavy without burning out. But, if you jammed your shoulders all day on the field, don't feel bad if you don't get your planned numbers on the Bench! Eitehr go light or find an alternate movement.

So, on to today's workout...as I said, this was a hybrid, so pay attention.

Bench - 320 x 2-minutes x 2

That's two, two-minute sets.

Some of you have probably seen video of me doing 320 x 25...but, my shoulders are beat up from football so, this is a good way to get a good amount of reps without further beating down my poor shoulders. Plus, my forearms cramped up terribly on rep 14, which is quite odd...will have to look into the reason for that.

But, the point is, sometimes this higher rep stuff is great for moving blood around, putting on size and actually recovering from the rigors of football.

Lat Pulls - 3 x 12

Close Grip Pad Press - 365 x 5, 5, 4

We occasionally use a Foam Roller instead of a pad. This makes the movement a cross between a Pad Press and a 4-Board Press. The Roller has a good amount of give so it forces you to produce more force in less time to overcome the bar sinking into the foam.

This is a great tricep movement and is excellent for building explosive hands to block people's faces off.

Neck Harness - Forward & Back - Black Band x 3 x 25

Face Pulls - 3 x 15

That's it...short and sweet. Our in and pre season workouts change constantly, just like our off-season workouts. They are made to match how the body is responding to practice, work, school, family stresses, etc. You have to take all this into account when you plan your training at any time of year.

If you have finals coming up and you're working after school and sleeping for 5 hours a night, your training will suffer. Sucks, but true.

But, the cool thing is, top-end strength (max strength) won't fall off much. So, the key is to get in, warm up to get your mind and body ready, hit up some major strength work, do a few accessories and then go rest. You'll run out of gas faster when times are tough, but, as long as you get in and bang out some good, heavy work quickly, you'll keep getting stronger for football...

And, how strong you are determines how fast you are, how explosive, how big, etc...so get out and get stronger, even when it feels impossible.

When Are Sports Parents Too Involved?

Saturday, January 15, 2011

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One sports parent began training his son at the age of four to become a pro football player. The dad quit his job to facilitate his son's coaching. The boy is now 12 and spends 10 hours per day training with his father.

When is a sports parent too involved?

Above all, sports parents need to keep in mind the importance of helping their young athletes lead balanced lives. Do they have the time to play with friends and pursue other interests? Or are their identities only defined by their role as athletes? You don't want your kids to judge their self-worth solely on whether they score points or play on winning teams.

It's also important to let the child lead you. You don't want your child to play sports to fulfill your dreams. When kids play only to satisfy their parents, they often feel pressured. It's difficult to play freely and intuitively. What's more, they generally drop out of sports, and then miss all its great social, emotional and physical benefits!

We're not saying you shouldn't be involved at all in your child's sports experience. It's all about striking a balance. Once your child decides to play sports, you've got an important role to play as sports parents.

You should take charge of finding an appropriate coach and team for your child. It's a good idea to support the coach and team as much as possible by bringing snacks or organizing the parents.

What's more, you should learn all about "mental game" strategies that will help your child boost confidence and happiness in sports. Some of these strategies include:

* Setting manageable goals instead of communicating high expectations

* Focusing your child's attention on the process of execution in the here and now instead of worrying about results, rankings, and statistics

* Helping kids take responsibility for their confidence instead of leaving confidence up to chance-and how well they play at the beginning of a game

* Helping kids learn how to let go of mistakes

* Encouraging young athletes to stay composed during crunch time so they can contribute to the team instead of tightening up and playing scared

* Encouraging kids to play freely and intuitively rather than playing scared and being afraid of making mistakes.

Remember that your child's sport experience is hers or his and not yours!

2010 Duke Football Predictions

Monday, January 10, 2011

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Duke was once considered one of the worst BCS football teams in the country, and while they still aren't an elite program, they have continued to improve over the last couple seasons. In 2009 the Blue Devils finished at 5-7, just one win away from bowl eligibility. A big reason for the turnaround at Duke is head coach David Cutcliffe, who has brought life to a team that use to be one of the easiest games on the schedule. In 2010 the Blue Devils will have 15 starters back, and figure to have a great shot at making their first bowl game since 1994. Here is a quick breakdown of what the Blue Devils will send to the field on both sides of the ball, plus my thoughts on where they finish the year in the ACC Coastal.

Offense:

Duke had just six starters back on the offensive side of the ball last season, but still managed to increase their scoring average from 20 points to 25 points a game. This year they have nine starters back, and will look for even more improvements from this side of the ball.

A big reason the Blue Devils were so successful on offense last season was the play of quarterback Thadeus Lewis, but he has graduated and left a big hole for the Blue Devils to fill this season. Heading into the fall it looks as though sophomore Sean Renfree is going to get the first shot at taking over the starting job, but he is coming off an ACL injury so it might take him awhile to get things going.

With all the improvements made on the offensive side of the ball, the Blue Devils were dreadful at running the football last season, as they averaged just 63 yards a game on the ground. Sophomore Desmond Scott was the leading rushing for the Blue Devils with just 262 yards and one touchdown. I look for Scott to get a lot more carries this season, and should give the Blue Devils a huge boost in the ground game, as I think they could increase their average over the 100 yard mark this season.

Renfree steps into a pretty good situation, as the Blue Devils return all three starting wide receivers and senior tight end Brett Huffman. Junior Donovan Varner led the Blue Devils in receiving last year with 65 catchs for 1,047 yards and eight touchdowns. While I think Varner is going to have a pretty productive season, I think we will see a bit of a drop off in the passing game this season, especially if the Blue Devils try to install the run more this year.

Up front the Blue Devils will have a lot of experience back on the offensive line, as four starters return from the 2009 season. Junior left tackle Kyle Hill figures to do a fine job protecting Renfree's blind side, but the Blue Devils must find a new starter at the other tackle position. Fellow junior Jon Needham is the frontrunner to take over the open spot, as he has the most experience and talent of any other tackle on Duke's roster.

Defense:

Duke dropped off on the defensive side of the ball last season, as they gave up just over 28 points a game last season. up front the Blue Devils return senior defensive end Patrick Egboh and junior defensive tackle Charlie Hatcher. Senior Wesley Oglesby has started 16 games during his time with the Blue Devils, and he is the prime target to take over at the other defensive end spot. As far as the other defensive tackle spot goes, look for sophomore Tyree Glover to step in and start next to Hatcher.

Duke didn't get the greatest play from their linebackers last season, but are hoping that they can improve things this season with senior middle linebacker Damian Thornton and senior weak-side linebacker Abraham Kromah back. Thornton finished third on the team with 5.5 tackles for loss last season, and will be asked for much of the same this year. Senior Adam Banks started four games for the Blue Devils at outside linebacker last season, and he figures to be the guy to step in and start all season on the strong side.

The only starters back for the Blue Devils in the secondary is senior corner Chris Rwabukamba and junior strong safety Matt Daniels, so there is likely going to be a drop off in production from this unit in 2010. Junior Jonny Williams is expected to start opposite of Rwabukamba at the other corner spot, while sophomore Jordan Byas looks to step in and start at free safety.

ACC Coastal Prediction - 5th: I think it's safe to say the Blue Devils will stay ahead of Virginia for last place in the Coastal, but I don't think we can expect them to finish any higher in this division, as the top four teams are all capable of finishing the year in the top 25. I look for Duke is going to have to pull off a few upsets if they want to reach the 6-6 mark and become bowl eligible this season.

Saturday, January 8, 2011

The American football game played on the tabletop on a metal vibrating field for fun by all age groups is termed as electric football. This game was created by Tudor games in 1947 used a vibrating car race game made by Tudor in form of base for the entire technology on games. This game gained such high popularity and a big sale in market that more than 40 million sets of this game have been sold in market and every year new editions are launched and sold.

In January 2006, the electric football league held its 12th annual official electric football super bowl and convention headquartered in Highland Park, Illinois. This game is played just like real football where on a small metal field plastic players are placed in an arrangement. A small piece of form or felt is given a shape of a ball is placed presumed to be a football.

After the setting up of players switch activation turns on a small electric motor causing vibrations on the field. This game gives you all players needed for fun football team on offense and defense and movement basis that allows a particular player that hopefully runs on particular rules. Game field is vibrated with an electric buzz to set players in motion. In an unpredictable manner the players take flight and it seems out of imagination. Set up your formations first then turn the switch on and off accordingly.

To allow the player to move, each player is attached to a base with prongs with dials that you can turn to run the player in left and right direction. Triple threat quarterback (TTQ) is a special player present in the game that allows other players to play, punk and kick field goals. The ball is placed on the tee of on the TTQ and there is a plastic leg fixed to kick the ball. Earlier versions included just little clicker type device to flip around the ball and later little felt footballs were included.

In The electric football you use your skill to create your own football heroes in 2D electronic game board. True ground shaking actions can be experienced. Players can run in any direction wearing hand painted football uniforms and jerseys. The set includes a colorful playing field, adjustable scoreboard, 22 players of the 2006 Super Bowl teams -including 2 "triple threat" quarterbacks that kick, run and pass, a magnetic first-down marker, a scale 10-yard chain and an official rule book.

Sports Betting Champ - Does it Really Work?

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

Sports Betting Champ is a system developed by John Morrison, a betting professional with more then 28 years of experience. He offers betting systems all the major sports: NBA, MLB and NFL. The average win rate in sports betting is about 50% while professional bettors can achieve about 60%. The system's sales pitch is that if offers a 97% win rate.

Is this really possible?
With straight wagers this kind of win rate is certainly impossible. John Morrison's system is not about making straight wagers and winning 97% of the time. It uses what is called progressive betting, with a three game series. It is carefully crafted to minimize your losses and to maximize your winnings.

The juicy information
Every professional bettor knows how to turn even the slightest edge into pure profit. If you apply the Sports Betting Champ system intelligently you can have a huge advantage. This translates into large profits in a short timeframe. It's not about luck, its about having carefully crafted strategy and sound money management plan.

That is what separates the winners from the losers in the long run. Sports Betting Champ is not one of those complex betting systems, which are extremely hard to understand. It is quite simple for the average person to apply the system and see the results.

Many people lost a lot of money looking for the perfect betting system. I'm sad to declare that I'm one of them. I decided to put the system to the ultimate test.

Stretching Exercises For Football

Saturday, January 1, 2011

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Football is a demanding hard hitting sport rife with injuries. There is no way to guarantee an injury free career. However conditioning can reduce the risk of injury and any good work out program includes warm ups followed by stretching exercise In this article we will discuss stretching exercises for football that will reduce the chance of injury and improve your over all athletic performance.

We cover some of the stretching exercises you perform on the calves, hamstrings, quads and piriformis muscles.

Calf Stretch:
1. Stand arms length from a wall, place your hands on the wall, gently fall forward to a position you are comfortable in while stretching the calves. Hold the position for about 20 seconds then come a little more forward stretching the calves a bit more. Do this three times going for a full minute or more with each exercise.

2. Stand on a stair, feet shoulder width apart, place your feet on the step just passed the ball of the feet. Let feet gently do down, this will stretch the Achilles, center of the calves and you should feel a light stretch on the center of the ham strings. Do this three times for about a minute each time. To stretch the outside of the calves, point the feet in and for the inside turn the feet out. This is a very easy and safe way to lengthen the muscles using your natural body weight.

Hamstring Stretch:
1. Assume a standing position, then cross the right foot over the left foot. From this position slowly and gently lower your hands to the floor and your head to the right knee. Hold this position for about 10 seconds. Do this several times then cross the left foot over the right foot and repeat the procedure. This will help loosen the hamstrings and prepare you for the next hamstring stretching exercise.
2. This exercise is a bit more demanding. Sit on the floor with one leg fully extended and the other leg turned in with the foot placed against the inner thigh. Bending at the waist, slowly and gently extend your hands towards the foot of the straight leg. Bend as far as possible and hold the position for 10 seconds. Repeat this action 5 times and then switch legs.
Personal note, I use the back of a chair and place the right hand to the left leg and vice versa. This gives my back muscles a better stretch work out.

Quadriceps Stretch:
1. Use a solid stationary object such as a chair. Place one hand on the chair for balance. Using the other hand to grab the ankle of the opposite foot, pull the foot upwards towards the buttocks, stretching the quadriceps. It is important that you stand straight and keep the leg you are standing on straight. Leaning forward will reduce the effectiveness of the exercise. Hold the position for 15 seconds and repeat it with each leg 10 times.

2. More advanced athletes can use the following squad stretching technique. Place yourself on your stomach on the edge of a bench. Have the dangling leg forward with the knee bent and the leg relaxed. Using a towel wrapped around the ankle of the other leg, pull the foot forward towards the buttocks to facilitate a good stretch. Hold the position for 10 seconds and repeat this 10 times on each leg.

Piriformis Stretch:

The Piriformis muscle allows for lateral rotation of the hip.For players who require lateral mobility such as running backs, receivers, linebackers, corners and safeties this is a very important stretching exercise.

1. Lay flat on your back on the floor, crossing your legs the same as if you were sitting. Place both hands under the knee on the "under leg" and gently pull the leg towards your chest. As you pull, you should feel the stretching in the gluts and hips. Hold for 10 seconds do each leg about 5 times.

2. Lay flat on your back cross the right leg over the left letting the ankle rest on the knee. Place the left hand behind and under the left knee and the right hand on the right knee. As you pull the left leg up towards your chest, push against the right knee. Hold this position for about 5 seconds and do this about 5 times each leg.

Post Workout Stretching:

This is as important as warming, stretching and then working out. After you have all that, you need to cool down and end with a post workout stretch. This will keep blood flowing to the muscles and help any bruises or minor injuries heal faster as well as remove lactic acid from the muscles, reducing the chances of muscle soreness.

In conclusion your workout program is best served with a pre and post stretching program. This will add to your speed, athletic performance and help reduce the chance of injury. To give yourself the opportunity to perform your best, have better balance, quickness and speed every work out program should include focus on the core muscles. There is core muscle training DVDs available.
