Cesc Fabregas will not appear in Wednesday's Champions League tie versus Shakhtar Donetsk.

Arsene Wenger recently reassured fans that the injury wasn't too serious and hopes Fabregas will face Newcastle on Sunday.

Wenger stated: "There's no real strain, it's just a little bit of pain, but we can't take a gamble because he's had injuries before in his hamstring."

Midfielders Alex Song, Andrei Arshavin and Denilson are doubtful for the European tie.

Fabregas picked up his unfortunate hamstring whilst appearing against Sunderland in the Premier League on the 18th September and didn't return until the Gunners' 5-1 victory over Shakhtar at the Emirates on 19 October.

Wenger did not reveal when Fabregas picked up the new problem but the midfielder will not be making an appearance in the squad that travels to Ukraine.

"He has a good chance to play on Sunday but tomorrow night is too risky," the Frenchman said.

"There's still a bit of reluctance to push it 100%."

Song has picked up a calf problem, Denilson has a groin injury and Arshavin has an unspecified injury.

All three of the Arsenal stars will be assessed later on Tuesday.

Arsenal make the trip east in a favourable position in Group H after scoring a huge 14 goals in winning their first three games.

However, the Gunners have yet to win in Ukraine, losing three and drawing one of their previous four matches there.

Shakhtar are currently top of the Ukrainian league, five points clear of rivals Dynamo Kiev.
